Week 12: A Primeira Transferência

Hello family and friends,

I have now been in Brazil for three months, evenly divided between the CTM and the field. I have had to talk to people, which is still difficult. I have studied the scriptures a lot, and taught a lot of lessons. Not as many as I expected from what I heard in the CTM (up to 15 or so per day, where reality has been maybe 15 in the last week), but still a lot. There have been several days in which nothing that was planned actually happened, and a lot of things that weren't planned did happen. We opened this area, meaning that immediately before us there weren't missionaries here, and before that the missionaries weren't very good, so we didn't have a lot to start with. We currently have 18 people that we've been able to meet with more than once, and a few more that we've seen once and will probably continue trying to contact a few more times. Some people are progressing more than others, but everyone we are teaching is in some way progressing. We have made progress here. I have progressed here. I speak better, both in terms of how well I know the language and how much I actually talk. I have one more transfer of training with Elder Bulkley, and then I will probably be training someone else. Missions are a great experience. If you haven't gone on a mission yet, you should plan to serve. It is open to all young men from 18 to 25 and young women 19 to probably 25 or 26, I don't actually know, who are worthy members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It is a special experience. I hope you all have this opportunity to serve the Lord.

And our scripture:

2 Nephi 25:26
And we talk of Crist, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophecy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.

In this season of Christmas, we have the opportunity to remember Christ a little bit more.

Christ is the center of the scriptures. He is the center of our church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Christ was born in Bethlehem about two thousand years ago, but this alone isn't incredibly important.

Christ lived and died, but even this alone isn't important. Many others also were born, lived and died.

But Christ is important, because He did what no one else could do: He paid the price for our sins and freed us from sin and death.

This is the reason for Christmas: Because of Christ, we can be free from sin, from pain, and from sadness. We can rejoice.

And as the Nephites knew, because of Christ, we can receive a remission of our sins.

This week let's remember why we celebrate Christmas. Let's remember that Christ came to free us from sin, pain, and sadness, so that we can receive joy and eternal life.

Thank you,
Élder Hiatt
