Week 10: Thanksgiving
(note from the editor: My apologies for posting this late... I was on vacation and totally forgot!)
Hello family and friends,
First off, I happen to know that there was a birthday this week, on the 22nd of November. Therefore, happy birthday to Irmã Braz, one of my instructors in the CTM. (I'm not actually allowed to email her directly, since she lives in my mission, but someone could pass this on to her.)
Here in Osasco, this week was fairly normal. We taught some more lessons. We invited another person to be baptized. We found some more people to teach. Some members recommended more families to teach, which is even better.
This saturday, the ward had a missionary activity where some of the members stood outside the chapel and invited people passing by to come to church the next day and learn more about it. Honestly, if every day of missionary life was like those two hours, we would convert the entire world.
Oh yeah, also, there was another birthday this week, also on the 22nd. Happy birthday uncle Dean!
In the Osasco ward, the second counselor of the bishopric is American, and he likes to celebrate Thanksgiving and share it with half the ward, including less active members and non-member friends, and the missionaries. Thanksgiving isn't really a holiday in Brazil, and Thursday is an awkward day to celebrate because of work and stuff, so he usually does it on the Saturday before or after. This year, there was the missionary activity last week and next week is Stake Conference, so he did it yesterday. I got to eat turkey, mashed potatoes, and rice, because this is Brazil. Also cake and some brazilian version of pumpkin pie. It was a good use of three hours, even though there were no rolls. (Technically, missionaries aren't supposed to stay in a house for more than one hour, but people here tend to be somewhat inaccurate when estimating when they will be ready to eat/be taught. Yesterday was the third time we waited exactly one hour from when we arrived to when we started to actually do what we came to do.)

E eu disse: Então não as entendes, porque elas verdadeiramente testificam de Cristo. Eis que te digo que nenhum dos profetas escreveu nem profetizou sem ter falado sobre esse Cristo.
Jacob 7:10-11
And I said unto him: Beleivest thou the scriptures? And he said, Yea.
And I said unto him: Then ye do not understand them; for they truly testify of Christ. Behold, I say unto you that none of the prophets have written, nor prophesied, save they have spoken concerning this Christ.
Nesse capítulo, o profeta Jacó está falando com Serém, que estava pregando contra Cristo ao povo dos nefitas.
In this chapter, the prophet Jacob is speaking with Sherem, who was preaching unto the Nephites against Christ.
Aqui Serém diz que acredita nas escrituras, mas não em Cristo. Porém, porque todos as escrituras nos dirijam a Cristo, isso não é possível.
Here Sherem says that he believes in the scriptures, but not in Christ. However, because all of the scriptures point us toward Christ, this is not possible.
Cristo é a parte central do plano de Deus, portanto todos os profetas profetizaram sobre Cristo. Adão pregou sobre Cristo. Noé pregou sobre Cristo. Moisés deu a lei que contém muitos sinais e símbolos da vida de Cristo.
Christ is the central part of God's plan for us, therefore all of the prophets have prophesied about Christ. Adam preached about Christ. Noah preached about Christ. Moses gave the law, which contains many signs and symbols of the life of Christ.
Cristo é o centro das escrituras. É o centro de nossa vida?
Christ is the center of the scriptures. Is he the center of our lives?
Seguimos o exemplo Dele e tentamos a viver como Ele era? Procuramos a entender as escrituras, que em verdade testificam sobre Ele?
Do we follow His example and try to live as He did? Do we seek to understand the scriptures, which truly restify of Him?
Essa semana, vamos tentar um pouco mais a viver e ser como Cristo. Não precisamos ser perfeitos agora, mas só pouco melhor cada dia até sermos aperfeiçoados Nele.
This week, let's try a bit more to live and be like Christ. We don't need to be perfect now, just a little bit better every day until we will be perfected in Him.
